WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT A PERSONAL BRAND
What is a personal brand?
A personal brand exits for every business whether entrepreneurs know it or not. But there is a monumental difference between a brand that is developed consciously versus unconsciously. The term "personal branding" itself is a relatively new concept for entrepreneurs. And as a result, there is a lot still misunderstood about what a personal brand is. Often when people hear the term “personal brand” they immediately think of a business logo or tagline. Which is traditionally what a brand stood for. But in fact, those are a small piece of the whole. Your personal brand is so much more. So, let’s take a moment to explore and define what I argue a personal brand really is.
When I was first introduced to the idea of personal branding it took me awhile to find the deeper meaning in this idea. I, much like a lot of you, used to think of it in terms of the tangible things like colors, logo, and design. But the more I researched and began to practice this idea through a deeper understanding of it, my life and my business transformed in the best possible way. I started to connect and embrace my own story, I got a clear understanding of the clients I wanted to serve and how I wanted to serve them, and a vision was born for what I believed my business could become.
Personal branding then is the idea of not marketing the physical product or service a company provides but instead marketing based on the person or persons who are behind the product or service. Because THAT is what makes a business unique. The business owner or owners themselves. That is the one thing that no other company has. The knowledge, experience, expertise, and vision of the people who established or run the company.
The dictionary offers a definition for personal branding. However, through all my research, professional work, and personal growth I found that the definition it provides isn’t complete. Therefore, I created my own definition of “a personal brand”. One I feel very strongly, and accurately, encompasses all aspects of the term.
A unique combination of ideas, values, and purpose that define who you are, what you do, why you do it, and how you do it.
Why is a personal brand important?
Here are my TOP FIVE reasons:
A personal brand differentiates your business.
A personal brand encourages self-confidence and embraces authenticity.
A personal brand helps you educate and attract your ideal client.
A personal brand lets you write your narrative.
A personal brand serves as a road map for your future.
